Oil on Canvas

Generations is a richly layered oil painting that weaves together two distinct visions of Tokyo’s market life across time. On one side, the artist’s father’s photographs from 1958 capture a bustling street market: crowded wooden stalls, bicycles against narrow alleys, and the soft glow of paper lanterns overhead. Opposite, the artist’s own photographs from the 2000s depict a modern, curated market — an airy, refined space where polished counters and carefully arranged goods replace the lively street bustle. At the center, a luminous lotus blooms, its petals stretching across both eras. As a symbol of memory, resilience, and rebirth, the lotus bridges father and daughter, past and present — offering a meditation on change, inheritance, and the quiet persistence of tradition.
